Google Business Profile Setup & Optimisation in Ireland
Your Google listing is often the very first thing a nearby customer sees — the map pin, the reviews, the phone number and the photos, before they ever reach your website. Set up properly it brings you calls. Half-finished, miscategorised or unverified, it quietly sends work to whoever is listed above you.
We set listings up from scratch, get them verified, clean up neglected ones and sort out duplicates and suspensions — then connect the listing to a website that turns those clicks into enquiries.
The listing itself is free from Google. Ongoing management sits in the Website Care + SEO Growth plan — see the care plans. Prices exclude VAT.
Setting Up a Listing Properly, Step by Step
Anyone can create a Google listing in ten minutes. The difference between one that produces calls and one that sits there is in the details below — and in the order they are done.
1Claim or create the listing
Plenty of Irish businesses already have a listing they have never seen — generated automatically or created by a former employee or a previous web company. The first job is finding out which situation you are in, claiming what exists and merging or removing duplicates rather than adding another one.
2Get the business details right first
Name exactly as you trade, no keywords bolted on. Phone number that actually rings. Opening hours that reflect reality, including bank holidays. Website link pointing at the most relevant page. These are the details Google checks against other sources, so they go in properly before anything else.
3Choose the primary category carefully
This single field does more than anything else on the listing to decide which searches you show up for. We look at how competitors in your area are categorised, pick the most precise match for your main work, and add only the secondary categories you genuinely provide.
4Set the address or service area correctly
Premises customers visit get a public address. Businesses that travel get service areas instead, with the address kept private. Getting this wrong from the start is the most common cause of suspensions and awkward re-verification later on.
5Pass verification
Google picks the method — usually video call, video upload, postcard or a code. We tell you exactly what to have ready: signage, branded vehicle, tools, paperwork or premises access, so the call is not wasted and you are not stuck in a queue for weeks.
6Fill out the parts most people skip
Services with real descriptions and indicative pricing where sensible. Attributes that matter to Irish customers, such as free quotes, wheelchair access, card payments or callout availability. A description that reads like a person wrote it, not a keyword list.
7Add photos that look like your actual work
Logo, a clear cover image, premises or van, team, and real completed jobs. Stock images stand out badly on a local listing. Photos are often the first thing a customer looks at, so a handful of honest ones beat a gallery of generic ones.
8Connect it to a site that converts
Traffic from the listing should land on a page that matches what the person clicked — the relevant service, with contact options in reach on a phone. That is where the listing turns into enquiries rather than views.
What Usually Needs Fixing
Most listings we look at are not missing — they are simply neglected, duplicated or set up wrongly years ago. These are the issues that come up again and again with Irish businesses.
Duplicate listings competing with each other
Two or three versions of the same business split reviews and confuse Google. They have to be merged or removed in the right order, not simply abandoned.
Suspended or unverified profile
Usually caused by a keyword-stuffed name, a virtual office address, or details changed too quickly. The cause has to be fixed before a reinstatement request has any chance.
A vague primary category
A general category quietly keeps you out of the searches that matter most. Tightening it is often the single highest-impact change on a neglected listing.
Details that contradict your website
A different phone number, an old address or hours that no longer apply undermine the listing and cost you calls from people who tried the wrong number.
No review process at all
Most businesses do good work and never ask. A simple, compliant routine after each job changes both visibility and whether people choose you.
Access lost with a previous provider
If an old web company or ex-staff member holds ownership, there is a documented process to request it back. It takes patience, but it is usually recoverable.
Who This Is For
If customers find you by searching with a place in mind — a town, a county, or simply "near me" — the listing is worth getting right. If you sell nationally online with no local element, it matters far less.
- Newly registered Irish businesses setting up a listing for the first time
- Trades and mobile services that need service areas rather than a public address
- Businesses whose listing was created years ago and never touched since
- Anyone locked out of a profile a previous provider still controls
- Businesses with a suspended or unverified listing
- Established businesses with reviews but no consistent process for getting more
Just starting out? Profile setup is part of how we get a new business online, and it pairs naturally with broader local SEO work.
What We Will Not Do
- Promise a position in the map results for any search term
- Stuff keywords into your business name to game the listing
- Set up a fake or virtual address to appear in an area you do not serve
- Buy, incentivise or write reviews on your behalf
- Create a second listing to work around a suspension
- Charge you for the listing itself — Google provides it free
Every one of those shortcuts risks the listing you depend on. The slower route holds up.
Turning Listing Views Into Enquiries
A busy listing is not the goal — booked work is. Two things decide whether views become jobs: how quickly you respond, and where the click lands.
Answer fast. Someone comparing three businesses in the map results is often ringing all three. Whoever picks up, or replies to a message the same hour, usually gets the job. Enabling messaging you do not monitor is worse than leaving it off.
Land the click on the right page. If your listing sends everyone to a homepage, they have to hunt for the service they searched for. Pointing the website link, and your service links, at the matching page removes that step.
Keep it current. Hours over bank holidays, seasonal services, new photos after a good job. A listing that is obviously maintained reads as a business that is trading.
Know what it produced. Calls, direction requests and website clicks are all reported. Tied to enquiries on your site, that tells you whether the work is paying for itself — which is what the lead generation side is built to measure.
If your website is the weak link — slow, dated or hard to use on a phone — a redesign will do more for you than any further work on the listing.
Google Business Profile Questions
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. The listing itself costs nothing — Google provides it. What takes time is setting it up correctly, getting through verification, choosing the right categories and service areas, and keeping it useful afterwards. That is the part we help with.
Do I need a shop or office address to be listed?
No. If you travel to customers — a trade, a mobile service, a callout business — you can be listed as a service-area business and keep your home address private. It has to be set up that way from the start, because switching an already-public address later can mean re-verification.
How does verification work in Ireland?
Google decides the method, and it varies: a video call showing your premises, vehicle or tools, a recorded video upload, a postcard to your address, or a phone or email code. Video is now common for Irish service businesses. You cannot choose the method, but being prepared with signage, branded vehicle, tools and paperwork to hand makes it go much more smoothly.
My listing was suspended. Can it be recovered?
Often, yes. Suspensions usually follow a details change, an address that looks like a virtual office, keywords stuffed into the business name, or duplicate listings for the same business. Recovery means correcting the underlying cause and submitting a reinstatement request with evidence. It is not instant and it is not guaranteed, and anyone who says otherwise is guessing.
How many categories should I choose?
One primary category that describes your main business as precisely as possible, then only the secondary categories you genuinely offer. The primary category has the most influence on which searches you appear in, so a vague choice quietly costs you visibility. Adding categories you do not really serve tends to bring wasted enquiries.
Are Google posts and Q&A worth using?
Posts help modestly and mainly help the person already looking at your listing — a current offer, a recent job, a seasonal service. The Q&A section is more valuable and more neglected: anyone can answer it, so it is worth adding the questions you get asked every week yourself, with accurate answers.
How do I get reviews without breaking the rules?
Ask real customers, at the point they are happy, and make it one tap — a short link by text or WhatsApp after the job. You must not offer discounts or incentives, write them yourself, or filter who gets asked based on how they might rate you. A steady trickle of genuine reviews with replies is worth far more than a burst of suspicious ones.
Do I need a website if I have a profile?
The listing gets you seen; the website is where people decide. Profiles that link to a clear, fast site with real service pages and easy contact tend to convert far better than ones pointing at a social page or nothing at all. The two work together — that is why we usually handle them together.
Is this the same as your local SEO service?
No. This page covers the profile itself — setup, verification, categories, service areas, photos, reviews and keeping it current. Broader local search work, including on-page local signals, business information consistency across the web, structure and reporting, is covered on the local SEO page.
Can you manage the profile on an ongoing basis?
Yes, as part of the Website Care + SEO Growth plan at €99 + VAT per month, which includes ongoing improvements, tracking and monthly reporting. A one-off setup or clean-up on its own is also fine if that is all you need.
More general questions are answered on the FAQ page, and budgets are covered in the cost guide.
